Installing modpacks for newbies

Modding Java Edition is much easier than people make it out to be, especially if you use a custom launcher—that is, a program which helps you manage different versions and mods on Minecraft. There are several options which handle the type of modpack Weaselfish is, such as sklauncher, Modrinth App or Lunar Client. For this tutorial, we’ll be using Prism Launcher, which is available for Windows, Mac and Linux.

First, you’ll have to, well, download Prism Launcher. If you’re on Linux, your distro might even have a package for it. Just follow the instructions on-screen and log in using your Microsoft account.

Once you’re in, the following instructions are many, but simple:

  1. Click “Add Instance in the upper left corner. This is like adding a whole separate installation of Minecraft: your settings, mods, etc. for a certain instance don’t affect your other instances.
  2. Select “Modrinth” in the list on the left of the new window. You can now search modpacks on Modrinth, which has replaced CurseForge as the Minecraft modding/plugin/shaders/etc. website.
  3. Type #weaselfish into the “Search and filter…” box, select the Weaselfish Modpack, then click “OK”. Because it’s not general-purpose, the Weaselfish modpack is unlisted on Modrinth; this means you have to search it by its ID, not name. If you’re a slow typer, some error boxes saying “The tasks failed” might pop up, but these can be safely ignored. Just click “OK” through the rest of the prompts.
  4. Click the new Weaselfish Farm instance, then click “Launch” to the right of the window. That’s it—you’re set!

Updating is as simple as selecting the instance, clicking “Edit”, selecting “Modrinth” then clicking “Update pack”. Just do this any time there’s a new release, which is announced in the Discord guild.

If this tutorial doesn’t suffice, and you’re still a bit stuck, don’t hesitate to join the Discord guild and ask for help.
